Someone mentioned that they’d read The Dream Machine for the first time recently, and I was reminded of how great that moment was for me. It starts off a bit slow, but if you persevere you’re rewarded with one of the most well-researched books on computing history ever written.
It’s nominally a biography of J. C. R. Licklider, but it’s so much more than that (although seeing it told through his life and work makes it even better). Worth noting that this is one of those books that had fallen out of print and was difficult to get a good copy of, but Stripe Press resurrected it in a beautifully designed hardcover.
